    TL;DR (quick answers )

    • Pick DC for bedrooms and living areas: quieter, more speeds, cheaper to run, longer-lasting, and a bigger range to choose from.
    • Pick AC for rentals or if you prefer simple wall-switch control: robust and cost-effective for spare rooms and spaces that aren’t used often.
    • Sizing rule of thumb: small bedrooms 48″–52″; lounges, living areas and outdoor spaces 52″–67″+.

What’s the difference between DC and AC fans?

Both AC and DC fans move air by spinning angled blades at speed. The difference is in the motor and control:

    • DC fans use a brushless DC motor. They’re typically quieter, more energy-efficient, and offer 5–8 speeds with smooth control (often via a remote or app).
    • AC fans use a traditional AC motor. They’re simple and affordable, usually with 3 speeds via a wall switch. They’re generally not as quiet or efficient as DC fans.

    Efficiency & running costs

    • DC fans usually use less power than equivalent AC models, especially at low and medium speeds—perfect for bedrooms where fans run for hours overnight.
    • Over time, that means lower running cost, particularly if you have multiple fans on most days in summer.

    Noise & comfort

    • DC: typically quieter thanks to motor design and finer speed control—ideal for bedrooms, nurseries and home offices.
    • AC: modern AC models can be quiet too, but DC tends to win when silence is the priority. You’ll also find a much larger range of models if you choose DC.

    Control & smart features

    • DC: most include a remote with more speeds, summer/winter reverse, timers, and often smart integration (brand apps, voice assistants).
    • AC: classic wall-switch operation (3 speeds + light) keeps things simple. Smart control is possible on some models with add-on modules, but it can add cost and complexity—if you want smart control without extra modules or wiring, DC is usually the simpler choice.

Choosing the right size (by room)

Use these quick guides for blade span. We’ll confirm on site:

    • Up to 10 m² –12 m² (small bedroom/office): 48″ / 1220 mm
    • 12 m² –18 m² (standard bedroom): 52″ / 1320 mm
    • 18 m² –25 m² (larger bedroom/living): 56″–60″ / 1420mm–1520 mm
    • Open-plan/large living: 65″+ / 1650 mm+

Tip: Keep blades at least 2.1 m above floor level and centred in the room. For raked ceilings, you may need an extension rod and extra bracing. Sometimes we install an angled support to reduce the bracket angle so the fan sits level.

    Indoor, outdoor, and coastal use

    • Outdoors/alfresco: choose outdoor-rated fans (corrosion-resistant materials; follow the manufacturer’s IP guidance).
    • Coastal: pick marine-grade or corrosion-resistant finishes.

Materials: ABS plastic blades are usually the best option for outdoor applications.

    Light or no light?

Fan-with-light” models combine lighting and airflow in one fitting—handy when replacing a single ceiling light point. If you choose a DC fan with a remote, no extra cabling is typically required.

DC vs AC: which should you choose?

    Choose DC if you want:

    • The quietest option for sleeping or working
    • Lower running costs and more speeds
    • Remote/smart control and easy reverse for winter
    • A wider range of modern designs

    Choose AC if you want:

    • The lowest purchase price
    • Simple wall-switch control with 3 speeds
    • A robust, no-frills solution for rentals or spare rooms

Still unsure? We install both every week. Tell us the room size, ceiling height and whether you want wall switch or remote, and we’ll recommend the best option for your home.

    FAQs

Are DC fans always better than AC?

Not always. DC wins on quiet and efficiency; AC wins on up-front price and simple wall-switch control. The “best” choice depends on your room and budget. For modern homes we usually recommend DC. For rentals, AC can be better because there’s no remote to lose.

Can I use a wall switch with a DC fan?

Many DC models are remote-only, but some support hard-wired wall controllers. We’ll advise based on the model. Note: wall controllers may not match your existing switch style and sometimes need extra cabling, which can increase installation cost.

Do I need an electrician to install a ceiling fan in QLD?

Yes—ceiling fans must be installed and certified by a licensed electrician in Queensland. Here’s a short safety video from the Electrical Safety Office: Electrical Safety Office video

What size fan for a standard bedroom?

Most standard Brisbane bedrooms suit a 52″ (1320 mm) fan; smaller rooms often use 48″ (1220 mm).

Will a fan lower the room temperature?

No—fans don’t cool the air; they move it so you feel cooler. They can help you raise the air-con setpoint and save energy.

Can I put a fan on a raked ceiling?

Yes. You may need an extension rod and extra bracing; we’ll supply and fit what’s required.
