What is the difference between a switchboard and a meter box?

Your meter box houses the electricity meter and the main connection point to the grid, while your switchboard distributes that power to the individual circuits throughout your home. The two are often located near each other, and sometimes in the same enclosure, which is why they get confused. How long does a switchboard last, and when should it be replaced?

A well maintained switchboard can last several decades, but the components inside it age well before the box itself does. If your home still has ceramic fuses, was built before the 1990s, or has never had its switchboard touched, it is worth having it assessed even if nothing has gone wrong yet. Older components are more likely to fail without warning, rather than giving you a clear sign first.
