Hawthorne electrical
Licensed electricians for Hawthorne homes, from Hawthorne Road to the river
Your Trusted Local Electrician
Your local Hawthorne electricians
Sorted Electrical looks after homes right across Hawthorne, Brisbane, from the streets around the Hawthorne Cinema on Hawthorne Road to the larger properties along the river. We’re a locally owned, licensed team based just down the road in Murarrie. When you call, you’ll be talking to the electricians who actually turn up and do the work.
Much of our work here is on Queenslanders being renovated, raised or extended, and on family homes running far more appliances than their original wiring was built for. We’ll take a proper look at what you’ve got and talk you through the options in plain language. You’ll have an upfront price before any work begins, and every job we complete is backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty.
Rewiring and upgrading Hawthorne’s Queenslanders
Hawthorne was carved up into housing estates from the 1880s, with riverfront blocks still being sold in the 1930s. Most of the suburb is now interwar Queenslanders mixed in with newer rebuilds. Some of the oldest homes, on Amy Street, Barton Road, Hawthorne Road and Virginia Avenue, are listed on the Brisbane Heritage Register.
In houses this old, the wiring has usually been added to bit-by-bit. A renovated kitchen might be on modern cabling while the bedrooms still run on original circuits, all feeding back to the same ageing switchboard. If yours still has ceramic fuses, or no button marked “T” or “Test”, some of your circuits probably have no safety switch protection.
Queensland law requires safety switches on power point circuits when a home is sold or rented, and the Electrical Safety Office recommends them on every circuit in the house. A switchboard upgrade is usually the best place to start. It brings that protection up to date and gives your home room for whatever you plan to add next.
Character homes need a careful hand, as original VJ walls and decorative ceilings are a big part of their appeal, so we plan cable routes to leave them intact wherever we can. If anything might affect them, we’ll talk it through with you first.
Electrical for renovations and extensions
Renovating in Hawthorne usually means getting more out of an older home. On a bigger block that might be a rear extension or a new kitchen, while raising a Queenslander can add a whole level of living space underneath. Each project changes what your electrical system needs to handle.
The best time to bring us in is while the plans are still being drawn. We can then work out where power points and lights should go before the walls are lined, and check your switchboard has room for the new circuits. Queensland’s rules require safety switch protection on lighting and power circuits whenever an installation is extended, so we design that in from the start. New kitchens are a good example, as an induction cooktop often needs a dedicated circuit of its own.
If you’re building underneath, think about flood levels too. Water can back up Pashen Creek into the lower, northern part of the suburb, and in January 2011 floodwater reached homes between Hawthorne Road and Lindsay Street. As your renovation electrician, we’ll build both into the plans so water downstairs won’t cut power to the whole house. Brisbane City Council’s Flood Awareness Maps show how your own property could be affected.
Outdoor lighting, pools and EV chargers for riverside homes
Along the river, either side of the heritage-listed Hawthorne CityCat terminal, many homes sit on generous blocks with gardens, decks and pools that get used well into the evening. Thoughtful outdoor lighting makes those spaces safer after dark and nicer to spend time in. We’ll help you work out where light is actually needed, then set it up on timers or sensors so nothing is left burning all night.
If you’re putting in a pool, bring your electrician in before construction finishes. The Wiring Rules require conductive metal within 1.25 metres of the pool edge, such as metal fencing, to be equipotentially bonded. As your pool electrician, we’ll handle the bonding and the power to your pump and filter, and fit pool lighting at the same time.
An electric vehicle charger draws a heavy load for hours at a time. Before any EV charger installation, we check that your switchboard and supply can carry it alongside everything else the house runs. In an older home that sometimes means upgrading the switchboard first, and we’ll tell you upfront if it does.

Emergency electrician in Hawthorne
Some electrical problems can’t wait.
If a power point sparks, a switch smells like it’s burning or a safety switch trips and won’t reset, stop using that circuit and call us on 0488 857 393. The Electrical Safety Office notes that a safety switch that won’t reset can point to a fault on the circuit, which needs a licensed electrician to find. We’ll get someone out to you as quickly as we can. If anyone is in danger or there’s a fire, call 000 first.

Frequently asked questions
Can you rewire a Hawthorne Queenslander that's being renovated or raised?
Yes. A renovation or raise is often the best time to rewire, since the walls and floors are already open and new cabling goes in with far less disruption. We'll coordinate with your builder so the rough-in is done before the linings go back on.
Do I need a bigger switchboard to add a pool, air conditioning or an EV charger?
Not always, but older switchboards often do. Each of these adds a substantial load and usually needs its own circuit, and your board needs room for those circuits plus safety switch protection. We'll inspect it before we quote and tell you whether it can take the extra load as it is.
Do you install outdoor and garden lighting for riverfront homes in Hawthorne?
Yes. We install garden, path, deck and pool lighting for homes right across Hawthorne, including riverfront properties. We'll plan where each fitting goes so your outdoor areas are well lit without throwing glare back into the house or over the fence.
How quickly can you reach Hawthorne for an emergency?
Our base in Murarrie is only a few kilometres away, so Hawthorne is close to home for us. Call 0488 857 393 and we'll let you know when we can be there.
Do you also service Bulimba, Balmoral, Norman Park and Morningside?
Yes, we work across all four. You can find out more on our Bulimba electrician and Morningside electrician pages.
